The County Commissioners approved the purchase of a specialized watercraft to remove tussock and invasive vegetation from specific county waterways. The new Eco Harvester was delivered to Lake Townsend.
The Eco Harvester will be used to keep the waterways clear for boaters at Lake Lindsey, Hunters Lake, Mountain Lake, Lake Bystre, Lake Townsend, and the Withlacoochee and Nobleton Rivers.
Tussock is a group of grass species that live in waterways as well as on land. In the water, tussock forms “floating islands,” creating immovable patches of vegetation that can grow quite large. The Eco Harvester will remove these areas, allowing for the passage of watercraft.
Pachaug Pond is a shallow lake with 10 coves. Since light penetrates to the bottom of the lake, it is especially susceptible to the growth of aquatic invasive species. The lake is currently plagued by overgrowth of fanwort, variable-leaved milfoil, Eurasian milfoil, and minor naiad. Past winter drawdowns of the lake level have not proved effective in controlling weed growth since these plants are located at depths which are unaffected by drawdowns. The lake's sheltered coves are especially immune to the effects of the drawdowns. The most recent survey of the lake concluded that additional actions must be pursued the control the lake's invasive species.
The PPWCA is a group of volunteers whose mission is to preserve and protect the unique quality and character of Pachaug Pond by developing a comprehensive management plan and educating the public in environmental aquatics that will protect, preserve, and enhance the ecological and water quality of the pond to the benefit of all.
Benton Conservation District (BCD) is leading the effort to manage overgrowth of water stargrass. Although a native plant, water stargrass acts like an invasive species dominating the lower river to the exclusion of other native plants. The dense vegetation creates challenges for irrigation and recreation, degrades water quality and fish habitat, and enhances breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes.
Benton Conservation District (BCD) with our partners commissioned a video to highlight the challenges facing our lower Yakima River. Many special thanks to Yakima Basin Fish and Wildlife Recovery Board, Benton County Mosquito Control Board, US Bureau of Reclamation, Yakama Nation Fisheries, Columbia Irrigation District, and other community leaders for their support in telling our story to help save our river.
Avon Area Lakes Association is an organization concerned with the continued vitality of the seven lakes under our care. We are dedicated to preserve and protect not only the lakes, but we also endeavor to affect in whatever way we can to help the vitality of the Spunk Creek watershed.
Aquatic Invasive Species are non-native plants, animals and pathogens that can thrive in our waterways and cause environmental damage. Reducing AIS has been our main focus for a number of years. Specifically, some Avon Area Lakes have been identified as containing Eurasian Water Milfoil. Our fundraising efforts, along with grants from Stearns County, DNR and the City of Avon have allowed us to survey and treat areas of Eurasian Milfoil in Middle and Lower Spunk Lakes. This effort will need to be expanded if or when AIS is discovered in any of the rest of our 7 lakes
